“Our 50-city, 51-venue, 60-plus-show UK tour of William Shakespeare’s Long Lost First Play (abridged) came to an end this weekend and Joe Maudsley, Matt Pearson, and James Percy sat down (on the beach!) to tell us what it’s been like to tour around the British Isles for four months. Featuring highlights and lowlights, raucous Derby audiences, getting to perform in Stratford-Upon-Avon, the joys of massive crowds and the lows of smaller ones, demonstrative British audiences, tights v. socks, the dangers of taxi slapping, and a return to the scene of the crime: the actual Leicester car park where we found Shakespeare’s long lost manuscript! Schoch reveals how he discovered the dual focus of his book; how it took almost 200 years for people to realize the treasure that still stood in their midst; the shenanigans played by people who first depicted Shakespeare’s birthplace; the important distinctions between restoring a house and remaking it; the trick of hitting that sweet spot between writing an academic history and a popular one; and how the most important person in Shakespeare’s birthplace is not Shakespeare but the visitor.
