Episode 478. Reading Stage Directions

Published by austin on

Are you the kind of actor or director who boasts, “I don’t read stage directions”? Playwrights Reed Martin and Austin Tichenor have some thoughts for you about the value of stage directions, plus helpful tips, lessons for playwrights too, favorite stage directions, the importance of “business” and using your time wisely, embarrassingly juvenile laughter, ridiculously long running times, and, ultimately, permission to ignore stage directions (especially if they’re wrong). Ha! You make an excellent point. And you also remind me: We may want to include in the published edition that outstanding list of new 12 Days of Christmas gift suggestions you compiled during our original run. Thanks, Emily!

Re: Stage Directions: My experience they blame stage directions on the previous Stage Manager. : ) I worked on two NEW scripts, where the director and cast were certain the stage directions came from the SM and not the Playwright. Congrats on getting Christmas published! I’ll look forward to reading my stage directions.
